AI & Design | A Word of Caution

Artificial intelligence is a remarkable tool that is rapidly transforming the way we live and work. Recent advances in machine learning and image generation have made it possible to create photorealistic visualizations in seconds. Increasingly, Landscape Design Consulting is being approached by property owners with AI-generated renderings illustrating compelling visions for their landscapes. A common misconception, however, is that AI-generated images can save time and money by reducing the scope and costs associated with hiring a landscape architect.

AI technology can assist with drafting, visualization, and data analysis, but it falls short of designing at the level of a licensed landscape architect. Architectural design requires professional judgment, creative synthesis, and ethical responsibility -- skills rooted in human experience and critical thinking. A licensed landscape architect interprets the unique context of each site, balances aesthetics with function and code compliance, and navigates complex owner and regulatory processes. AI can process information, but it cannot understand meaning, assume liability, or make value-based decisions that ensure design quality, safety, and integrity.

Viewed in this context, starting with an AI-generated rendering is like putting the cart before the horse. Whereas renderings are a product of design, design is never the product of a rendering. Landscape architects are held accountable to rigorous standards of professional practice intended to protect the public health, safety, and welfare, and cannot fulfill this obligation by reverse-engineering a set of signed and sealed construction documents from an AI-generated image. Therefore, all landscape projects requiring professional design services, signed and sealed drawings, and representation in jurisdictional meetings, necessitate meaningful engagement by a landscape architect.
