Landscape maintenance is no different than caring for a home or vehicle, and is essential for preserving the health, safety, function, and enjoyment of a property. Regular care - including mowing, mulching, pruning, fertilization, irrigation management, pest control, and seasonal cleanups - ensures plants remain healthy, thriving, and functioning in their intended capacity. Responsible landscape maintenance practices reduce the need for irrigation and chemicals, extend the life of plantings and other installations, and translates into long-term savings by eliminating small inexpensive problems before they evolve into costly fixes. Because improper work can cause significant damage, landscape maintenance should be entrusted only to qualified, experienced professionals.

Trees: Tree maintenance is essential for the health, safety, and aesthetic value of a landscape. Pruning removes dead or crowded branches to maintain structure and encourage healthy growth, while selective thinning improves light penetration and air circulation. Aeration and soil management enhance root development and nutrient uptake, and targeted fertilization supports long-term vitality. For mature or structurally complex trees, cabling and bracing provide additional support to reduce the risk of limb failure. Tree care should be approached with a balance of science and artistry to ensure that trees remain healthy, thriving, and functioning in their intended capacity across built and natural interests.

Shrubs: Regular maintenance of shrubs is essential to preserve their health, form, and visual impact within a landscape. With regard to built environments, pruning encourages healthier growth and habit, removes dead or diseased branches, and maintains harmonious spatial relationships across shrubs. Soil care, including mulching and fertilization, supports nutrient uptake and moisture retention, while monitoring for pests and diseases ensures long-term vitality. In luxury landscapes, shrubs are carefully managed to complement surrounding plantings, hardscapes, and architectural features, providing year-round texture, color, and structure that enhance the overall composition of the garden.

Perennials: Perennials require seasonal care to ensure vitality, bloom performance, and aesthetic continuity across the growing season. Routine tasks include deadheading spent flowers, cutting back foliage after the first frost, dividing overcrowded plants, and monitoring soil health and moisture levels. Responsible fertilization and mulching support robust growth, while careful attention to sun exposure and spacing prevents overcrowding and disease. In luxury landscapes, perennial maintenance is approached with precision and artistry, ensuring vibrant, layered plantings that provide consistent color, texture, and seasonal interest while complementing the overall design.

Responsible Turf Care: Turf canopies should be maintained at a minimum height of 3 inches. Taller canopies reduce the need for irrigation by casting longer shadows over surrounding areas and preventing evaporation; absorb more sunlight, thereby mitigating competition from weeds that would otherwise require herbicides to control; and help to conceal bare spots that may otherwise inspire the use of fertilizers in order to maintain a “healthy lawn” appearance. Moreover, mulching blades are recommended for mowing equipment so that cuttings can return nutrients into the soil as opposed of being removed from the system and dumped off- site.

Chemicals in the Landscape: The use of chemicals in landscape maintenance poses significant risks to both environmental and human health. Pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers can leach into groundwater, contaminate nearby streams, and disrupt local ecosystems by harming beneficial insects, pollinators, and soil microorganisms. Over time, chemical dependency weakens natural soil structure and reduces biodiversity, leading to landscapes that are less resilient and more prone to pest and disease outbreaks. In residential settings, these substances also pose direct health hazards to children, pets, and wildlife. Sustainable maintenance practices that rely on organic amendments, integrated pest management, and soil health restoration offer safer, longer-lasting results without compromising environmental integrity.

Organic Pest Control: Organic pest control methods such as using peppermint oil to deter ticks or cinnamon to repel ants offer a natural, environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic chemicals. These plant-based substances rely on strong natural compounds that disrupt pests’ sensory systems without harming beneficial insects, pets, or soil health. Peppermint oil, for example, can be diluted and sprayed in shaded, moist areas where ticks thrive, while cinnamon can be sprinkled near entry points or garden beds to discourage ants. Though organic solutions may require more frequent application and are less potent than commercial pesticides, they support a safer landscape ecosystem and align with sustainable maintenance practices.

Irrigation: Proper irrigation is essential for the health and longevity of a landscape, but the method used must match the plant type. Trees and shrubs should always be watered with drip irrigation, which delivers moisture directly to the root zone without wetting foliage or trunks. Rotary irrigation should be reserved exclusively for turf and must never come into contact with woody plants. Spray irrigation can be used for larger perennial beds, but care should be taken to prevent water from reaching trees and shrubs. Following these guidelines ensures efficient water use, protects plant health, and reduces the risk of disease and stress.

Mulch: Mulching provides a wide range of benefits that enhance both plant health and overall landscape performance. A proper layer of organic mulch helps retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weed growth, reducing the need for frequent watering and chemical herbicides. As mulch decomposes, it enriches the soil with organic matter, improving structure, aeration, and nutrient availability. Mulching also protects roots from temperature extremes, reduces soil erosion, and promotes a clean, finished appearance in planting beds. When applied correctly - two to three inches deep and kept away from plant stems and root flares - mulch is one of the most effective and sustainable components of a healthy landscape.

Mulchcanos: The use of “mulch volcanoes,” or excessive piles of mulch mounded against tree trunks, is both harmful and widespread. Whereas proper mulching techniques conserve moisture, reduce maintenance, and improve appearance, volcano mulching traps moisture against the bark - leading to rot, disease, and root suffocation; it also encourages shallow root growth and girdling, making trees less stable and more vulnerable to drought and wind damage. Property owners beware: volcano mulching is a dead giveaway that the individual or company hired to maintain your property is not qualified.

Hardscape Maintenance: Properly installed hardscape systems require relatively little ongoing maintenance; however, some periodic care is inevitable over time. Maintenance activities may include re-pointing mortared joints as materials weather and settle, power washing to remove mold, mildew, and organic staining, and addressing minor surface wear caused by environmental exposure. Routine maintenance helps preserve both the appearance and long-term performance of patios, walkways, and retaining walls.

Efflorescence: is a white, powdery residue that appears on masonry surfaces when soluble salts are carried to the surface by moisture migrating through the masonry system. It is often caused by water reacting with decomposing organic matter or other salt-bearing materials within or behind the masonry, then evaporating and leaving the salts behind. Efflorescence is primarily a cosmetic condition and can typically be removed using a light solution of muriatic acid and water, applied carefully and in accordance with manufacturer and safety guidelines.

De-icing Salts: are particularly detrimental to masonry systems with mortared joints because they accelerate chemical and physical breakdown of the mortar matrix. Chloride salts attract and retain moisture, increasing the frequency and severity of freeze–thaw cycles within the joints, while also disrupting the cementitious binders that give mortar its strength. Over time, this process causes the mortar to lose cohesion, resulting in joint erosion and reversion to loose sand, ultimately compromising the durability and structural integrity of the masonry system. Only masonry-safe de-icing products should be used on patios, walkways, and other masonry systems with mortared joints.
